The Food & Drug Administration has required all TV advertisements for prescription drugs to list possible side effects.
Should the Federal Trade Commission require all TV advertisements for “smart devices” to list possible privacy and security risks?
Yes, I think that the FTC should require all TV advertisements of smart devices to have potential privacy and security risks, because of how unaware some people would be in regards to how this data is being collected. I know for a fact that my mom would most likely assume that the data for things on an apple watch that she owns is more or less contained on her watch, and bringing these issues to light may help her consider if the privacy risks would really be worth it to make things worthwhile. I was not aware of the issues facing these devices, and I think that listing these risks would help the general public think more about their "Smart" devices, and the negative effects that happen on their privacy.
ReplyDeleteNo I don't think that we should have to list all the possible privacy and security risks. This is not something like a drug that goes into your body and may have catastrophic damages to your health. Another point is, in these advertisements they almost always say to check or consult with your doctor before taking. With a Federal Trade Condition with their "Smart Devices," there is no option or person for them to consult to talk to about these risks.
ReplyDeleteWhile I do believe that there should be some regulations in place, I do not think that something like this is necessary for smart devices. I believe that the potential danger of prescription drugs greatly outweighs the potential danger of smart devices. Instead, a policy should be implemented such as something that requires the manufacturer to clearly convey to the consumer (via the packaging or notifications on the device) the risks of smart devices and the consumer's privacy options. However, to go to the extreme of forcing the advertisements to contain all possible risks is "overkill".
