Reflection for week 5

In this week the class discussed the issue of facial recognition and more specifically comparing Utah V.S. Washington States laws. Important topics covered in this week were the Anonymity of facial recognition, authentication V.S. Identification and commercial use of facial recognition.

I had stated off the week with my troublesome blog post about the difference with the two states Utah and Washinton State. I had discussed the difference in their laws, with Utah's being more controlled government policy where only the DPS can access the technology, and Washington Stats more open government policy. In class we first talked about the different ways to identify, for example, palm prints, signatures, voice recognition and DNA tests. More indepth discussions in class consisted of commercial use in Airports with authentication for checking in for flights, restaurants so a customer can order faster or order their "usual," and Retail stores to prevent shoplifting. we had also gone over the difference between authentication, meaning to confirm who you are from who you say you are, V.S. Identification meaning I am identifying someone you don't know.

Facial recognition with the aspect of privacy had me initially thinking that no business should be allowed to use this technology. The inaccuracy and the wrongful accusations with women and race make the technology a little unstable. Other concerns consist of, data security, the usage, how its stored, notices and consent and last but not least the concern of tracking. My take initial thoughts had slightly changed with our Superbowl analogy. Previously thinking that no business is allowed to use it became clearer how important security is with this especially in big events. As a class we had come to an agreement that we facial recognition is allowed with notices on the physical and online tickets. We had also agreed upon deleting the information gathered and not to sell it after the event.
